    1. Short answer - camera lacks sufficient dynamic range.

      Long answer - with the camera set to properly expose the buildings and the foxes, the light from the snow and the (presumed) paw prints will exceed the sensor's or film's ability to capture the difference in light. A HDR composite might help, but snow is challenging to photograph.
