  1. Anyone know what the syllables "Kyo" and "To" mean? I notice that Japan has Kyo-to and To-kyo, and I'm wondering if the names mean anything. Like "Townsville" and "Villageton" or somesuch.

    1. The Sheik answered your qn about Tokyo. Kyoto means Capitol City, and was exactly that from around 800 AD to 1620 or so (though the emperor reigned more in name than in fact). The emperor stayed in Kyoto after that, but Ieyasu designated Edo as the capital then, and so it remained. IDK when its name was changed to Tokyo, probably around 1870 after the modernizer faction defeated the successors to Ieyasu.

  2. Tokyo means "East Capitol". Tokyo was called "Edo" before they changed the name when it was made the capitol. I believe Kyoto was the capitol before this, or at least whee the Emperor and his court were located. I think.

    1. The caption says Kyoto. I missed it, but was only there for a day.
