  3. If I've my story straight, these planes were using giant, custom Rolls-Royce engines funded by the UK government. Winning races and setting records was important for national prestige, kind of like the Sputnik was for Russia and Apollo was for America. Working wage was a pound a week, which translates to about a hundred bucks week today.
