Fun and Dangerous!

  1. Starting fluid bead expander. Don't do it.
The only guy I've ever seen use it was an old Arkie I worked for who didn't know whether his ass was punched or bored (his expression).

  2. Video's make it look simple. Anything but. Used a whole can of ether and didn't work. There's a reason tire shops don't do it. Eventually got it to work and fun, definitely not efficient. Good video fun.

    1. It is simple. Simply get more fuel INSIDE the tire cavity than outside and don't dawdle and let it evaporate. If you do that it HAS to work. physics. Yes, tire shops used to do that. The reason they don't do it now is because they have thousand dollar machines that do it instead.

  3. I had a part-time job at an aftermarket Harley speed shop years ago. One of the projects was a wide tire chopper that the master fabricator could not set the bead on a 360 tire. I was the lowly IT guy who got roped into oil changes and stock tire changes to help out when the service department was overwhelmed. I told the master mechanic to leave the tire out in the sum and I would have it mounted when he got back from lunch, A little either and a spark set the bead. It does take a little skill.

  4. When the rim is too wide for the tire, this method of inflation becomes necessary.

  5. A safer and more effective way to do it:

If you don't want to pay retail and are a decent welder you can make your own out of a big truck air receiver tank and buy the necessary additional parts at a hardware store.

  6. When I do this I lay a 5' trail to the tire on the ground then light it. It doesn't take much to work. Remember you can try it again if you don't use enough but you might not recover if you use too much

  7. First time I saw this, I was broke down on 1st Avenue in NYC in front of Bellevue Hospital with a flat tire. Guy comes out, puts a new tire on the rim and does that. I almost had a heart attack. You see, I was delivering Liquid Oxygen to Bellevue and had 5000 gallons of it in the trailer.

  8. Raced modifieds with 8" slicks....had a Cheetah, an air blaster bead setter, but it didn't work 1/2 the time.....starting fluid and a spark were standard procedure....worked every time....

  9. I saw this done on a tractor tire.

  10. A ratchet strap and soapy water works just fine.

  11. The key to making it work is to have a good quality of ether.
    Walmart shit won't do it.
I used a little too much on one of those single use 14.5" mobile home tires.
Blew it right free of the rim.
Guy driving by the shop swore that the wall bulged out a bit, but he had a few empty road sodas on the floor.
