And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I remember it well watching the video at the time. It was a practice run for a Thunderbirds show, and it was a mistake in the entry altitude of the maneuver. The time between deciding "Oh SH*T" and pulling the eject handle is something less than a second.
The photographer was in an old control tower just off the runway. I'm sure he took that photo and ducked and then prayed the plane didn't veer his way.
I am reminded of a film strip I was shown in AFROTC, LO!. those many years ago, of a E-1 testing ejection seats. Didn't work right. Ejected him. Smoked a cig, got in, ejected. Smoked cig down to nuthin', got in, ejected. (IIRC, he came out of the seat and hit face down.) Last scene, E-1 holds up cig pack, points to it, smiles. WElllll, ya had to be there.
Looks like a Thunderbird plane. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteToo bad, that '16s a gonner. Unlike a Tesla it can't "self-drive".
ReplyDeleteExpensive excitement for both the crowd and the pilot! An air show they will all remember...
ReplyDeleteIt's sad what lengths they have to go through nowadays to get an audience. I don't think your government will b needing them from now on anyway.

ReplyDeleteMountain Home AFB 2003. He misread altitude coming out of the bottom of a split "S". Had no choice but to get out.

DeleteLots of unpleasant interviews to ensue after that mishap...
ReplyDeleteThat is a really remarkable photo. Pure chance to capture that exact moment.

ReplyDeleteProbably should have used Bottom Gun music instead of Top Gun.

Ejected straight to a desk.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, but definitely out of the Thunderbirds
