Flight UA328 Denver to Honolulu - Wow

  1. Some of it was pure dumb luck, but the most remarkable thing about that was that nobody was hurt. In the air or on the ground. Some homes were damaged, and people were inconvenienced.

Saw a woman on the news who said she could feel the heat coming up through her seat. She must have crapped herself - that would be the only way to get something warm in the seat. The engine is out there on the wing, there's no way it could conduct heat into their seats.

These jets are rated to not just fly on one engine, but to climb out of an airport if the engine fails like this during take off. Which is not to diminish that the pilot handled it masterfully. Pilots practice for this in simulators but reality has a way of throwing new things at you.

  2. Flying from the mainland to Hawaii reminds me the the John Wayne 1954 flick: "The High and the Mighty". All's well that ends well.

  3. Lost a fan blade and part of the one next to it, about 40 pounds out of balance at ~3000 rpm.
