  2. Convair made a cargo version of that monster, the XC-99. I think they only made one or two, but I had the chance to crawl around it at Kelly AFB in 1995. The thing is absolutely massive. I'd hate to be the poor schmuck who has to do the spark plug change every 50 hours. 6 recip engines, 28 cylinders each, 2 plugs per cylinder....336 plugs. The cheap ones today are $15 each.

  5. I'm just old enough to have seen one of those contraptions flying once. Holy carp was that thing LOUD!

    1. Me too! But mine was way the hell up there(1950's?)!
      And the sound was if the engines were synchronized!
      There is a documentary on YouTube that lets you experience that sound!
