And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Convair made a cargo version of that monster, the XC-99. I think they only made one or two, but I had the chance to crawl around it at Kelly AFB in 1995. The thing is absolutely massive. I'd hate to be the poor schmuck who has to do the spark plug change every 50 hours. 6 recip engines, 28 cylinders each, 2 plugs per cylinder....336 plugs. The cheap ones today are $15 each.
Me too! But mine was way the hell up there(1950's?)! And the sound was if the engines were synchronized! There is a documentary on YouTube that lets you experience that sound!
Umm, okay? I don't see the comparison but, okay. They're both cool.

ReplyDeleteYeah, but back then it was on your father or grandfather's ...dime!
DeleteA flying bus with the mighty 36hp engine is always something to see.
ReplyDeleteAlso....which of the two-types of engine(B-36) was converted to use the others fuel?
ReplyDeleteI'm just old enough to have seen one of those contraptions flying once. Holy carp was that thing LOUD!

No accident that the B-36 was dubbed The Aluminum Overcast.
