  3. It is called SLAG and in iron production is the waste from a blast furnace. The skag is dumpped from its carrier called a Slag Pot. See: https://youtu.be/6N64Je77iAM.
    Copper smelting also produces slag:https://youtu.be/aIDWK_duRZ8.

  4. We use that for driveway gravel. One of the benefits of living in a steel mill town, slag 2$ a ton. The old timey open hearth stuff was the prettiest. The new ark furnace slag has no color.

  6. If you've never been in a steel plant, you have no idea of the heat.
Back in the '70's, I drove a Euclid while they were emptying the sludge pits from the precipitators at the Fairless Steel works. We had to drive about 100 yards from the rail line they used to take the crucibles out of the open hearth. You'd have to roll up the window when you went by, it was that hot.

    1. Yep. Kind of looks like the machine was adapted from a pan.

  9. Just how many windmills would it take to power things up to get that much slag?

    1. Good question.

And what happens if the wind dies down before you're finished?

  10. Put a cow catcher on front and you can roll up your peaceful rioters in one swell swoop and run them back to the slag heap...
