Catching the tip

  1. I have watched them (albatross) do that many times. I think they do so because they can. Magnificent fliers.

  3. I was driving down the Coos River Highway a few months ago and saw a heron taking off. It was flying very fast, very low, occasionally a wingtip touching the water. I assume birds get more lift in ground effect just like airplanes do.

    I paced it for 3-4 miles at a steady 38 mph per GPS.
