Breaking (or splitting) a board isn't really hard when you do it with the grain. And looking at the way those boards were all cupped, that's what happened.
In the "game" this is called a "false break". The spaces between the tiles or boards, makes this "mucho, mucho" easier. Yeah, I did stupid stuff when I was younger. worm
