A Good Job

  1. That's Leo Goolden on the right. He's rebuilding the Albert Strange designed Tally Ho. She's a 111 year old 40 footer that won the Fastnet race. The Fastnet is not an easy race.

Leo originally thought he could salvage some of Tally Ho. It turned out she needed everything from the keel up, including a new keel. He was able to keep the ballast keel - the actual keel is in two parts; the ballast keel of lead and the structural keel which is joined to the ballast keel. He has the skill level of a professional boat builder so the project is coming along nicely. He even lofted her from the original plans.

The man on the far left is Pete. He is a professional boat builder who worked on the restoration of the Western Flyer, a U.S. west coast fishing boat that took Ed Ricketts and John Steinbeck into the Sea of Cortez. Pete is quite a character but very skilled. Other than Pete, Leo has used gangs of volunteers in his project.

Sampson Boat Company is Leo's YT channel.
Western Flyer Foundation is the YT channel for that restoration.

A project that will blow your mind is Sail Cargo, Inc. They are building a 250 foot cargo vessel in the jungle of Costa Rica. Only a handful are paid, the rest of the gang are volunteers from around the world. It has a hippy vibe but if you can ignore that it is astonishing what they are doing.

  2. You all are invited to support Leo and his crew. The video archive presently has 74 episodes. Even if you don't think you like wood boats, the vids are amazing.
