Perhaps an EA=6?
Another version was a refuel tanker.
EA-6B loaded with jammer pods
Yup, EA-6B.The refueler was the KA-6.
Among the cognoscenti was often referred to as the "Queer." This is before SJW's roamed the bases searching for malefactors. Actually the last EA-6B's were just retired a couple years ago. Now the Naval EW stuff is aboard the EA-18G "Growler."Supposedly, the new AC can duplicate what the Queer did with a two man crew. V/R JW
Was buzzed by a prowler while hiking the Appalachian Trail in Virginia years ago. I could see the rivets!
Rivets? Sure you did.
You can tell it's a queer from the gold in the canopy. That's why they called it the queer.
Growlers fly out of NAS Whidbey Island north of here. Base has been there for decades and decades, and of course the new arrivals moving into the area bitch about the noise and want the base shut down. But folks who've been there a good while and have brains just say the growl is the sound of freedom.
Born and raised on the island..... :)
Worked EA-6B & A-6 for years. The EA-6B was a heck of a lot louder than the Growlers or lawn darts. Station here (The Rock) twice - used to be a decent place. Contemplating greener grass in a more desirable social climate east. In the mean time spread the word - check out Mike Glover and American Contingency. For like minded individuals interested in saving our way of life.
A6 is one of favorite aircraft. Only attack aircraft Im aware of with no forward firing gun. Takes Heart to fly into a beast that knows you got nufin.
On the 'E' we called the EA-6B a 'double-ugly'. FWIW.
My Dad was a pilot for the US Marine Corps during Vietnam. His second tour he flew this planes "Daddy" the EA-6A. When I asked him what he did, he vaguely mentioned something about flying around blasting radars hoping to get "lit up" by a Vietnamese radar (SAAM) site. Years later, after he passed, I was walking through a model store and saw a large scale model of an EA-6A. Below the title it said "Wild Weasel". Then it all made sense....He was lighting radar sets up so he could shoot HARM missiles at them and kill SAAM sites! Explains the picture I found in his stuff after he passed of him sticking his head through a hole in the wing of his aircraft. Handwritten at the bottom of the pic it said "Close".
Marine Corps and USN have Aviators - Army & USAF have pilots. Not sure what term USCG uses. All are highly skilled "Flyers".
