Out in the garden

The truck said it was 104 today, but in the evenings it cools off enough to be at least ok outside.  A good time to check out how the garden is doing in the heat.

I am trying to grow some Chinese Five Color peppers this year, and lo and behold,  all the seeds germinated.    At this point, there are lots of peppers, but they are all purple right now.  I'm still waiting for the other four colors.  Ate one last weekend.  HOT!

 Here the little firecrackers are next to the cherry tomatoes.

I think this is the Hokkaido Winter Squash, but I'm not sure.  I swear I'll do better labeling next year.  This one was slow to get started, but suddenly blew up and is vigorously climbing up a nearby chain link fence, and those squash are growing insanely.  I see some excellent squash soups this winter.  The one pictured here is about the size of a football.

While outside, these two pilots flew over in tight formation.  They would fly along like this until one would peel off to one side, and a few seconds later the other would follow, making big circles and figure eights.  They did this over and over right above us.  I don't know why they were doing it, but it was cool to watch - kind of like a mini Reno Air Show.

Small aircraft, big clouds.

Maya the kitten found a perfect spot to stretch out next to a Lebanese summer squash.  That variety all sprouted, and now it's a challenge to eat them all.  The cat isn't interested in helping eat them, however. She'll take kibble instead.

  2. Nice pix, indeed, and thanks for the daily time wasted;-}

    Your beautiful young cat, btw, is a Maltese Blue, not a Russian as most folks assume. The key is the golden eyes with the blue coloring, and the stout bodies (Russian Blues have green eyes and skinny frames.) The French call them Chats de Chartreux; they have a long history of being bred for companionship by the monks of Malta. I've had two and a friend has a third, and they've all been the most loving and gentle and athletic cats I've ever known.

    1. Rob, she's only a few months old, but that describes her exactly. We did in fact think she was a Russian Blue, but now stand corrected. Thanks very much for the information.
