  1. Static electricity is neat to watch sometimes... In a CG helo running the basket down at night you could get a 2' long blue arc from the basket to a hand reaching for it. The rotor blades moving through the air make static electricity just like the wings of the plane in this gif.

    1. Is that what causes so called ball lightening that sticks around for a few seconds?

  2. Great question, but incidents of ball lightning have been around for centuries. Not sure, but I believe it is a completely separate phenomenon. Not saying this couldn't cause it, simply unsure.

  3. For those who don't know, airplanes are designed with static wicks, which bleed off a static charge which may build up on the aircraft.

    1. For those who don’t know, they expect the typical commercial jet to get hit by lightning once or twice a year. Depends on where they’re flying, of course. Tropics get it worse than polar regions in general, but there’s nothing on a plane that isn’t tested to survive it.

  4. Same thing with sling loads on choppers, The guy always grounds the sling before connecting it to the load.

    1. It’s especially exciting when the guy with the static probe misses his timing.
