And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
What the kendoka is holding is a shinai; a bamboo practice sword which is intended to have similar weight and reach to a katana. As she is not wearing practice armor, and is in a hallway of the dojo, my guess is that she is on her way to practice kata. She would appear to be one of the ~1.5 million Japanese who study Kendo.
