And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Taken before May 28th, 1942, when the "Red Meatball" was formally eliminated, but sometime after the introduction of the F4F-4, which is what is shown in the picture (note the open access door on the port wing for the outboard .50 cal. machine gun). Note that the -3 model was still in use as late as the Coral Sea battle, so this could well be in mid-May, but I don't really know when CV-6 embarked the -4 model to replace their -3's.
The Red Meatball didn't stay in the Star for very long.
ReplyDeleteF4F Wildcats likely from CV-6 Enterprise's 'Fighting Six' if I'm reading the squadron indicator correctly
ReplyDeleteYup; that's my read as well...

ReplyDeleteThe random placement of the wing markings must have driven the Chief spare.
