And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Oliver Loving and Charles Goodnight had a steer named Blue that led their cattle drives for several years. He was a beloved member of the crew that would start the drive in the morning and bed the herd down at night before he'd head over to camp to get his nightly treats. He'd start them across rivers and lead them into the loading pens at the end of the drive before sneaking out and re-joining the crew for the trip back to Texas. He eventually retired at the ranch and led a comfortable life before he passed away of old age and was buried with a monument marking he spot.
It was believed he perfected his keen abilities because he knew what was coming at the end of that train trip and wanted to avoid it. And avoid it he did.
I’ve seen cattle guards that were no more than stripes painted across the road. Maybe the cows would have to be “trained” on the real thing before that illusion would work.
No doubt helped along by observation and a good dose of "been there - done that"
ReplyDeletelikely the cattle guard hasn't been cleaned in years, either. It's gotta be a least 16" deep
ReplyDeleteIn oregon they're painted on the roadway. Works well, cuz most steaks are stoopid.
DeleteThose Texas Longhorns are a crafty bunch.
ReplyDeleteSo true.

I've also seen video of one lying down next to the grate and rolling across.
ReplyDeleteSlow and in very low gear gets you over obstacles every time.

ReplyDeleteI have seen lots of those gates out west, but rarely have I ever seen one in north Alabama, but have seen a few.
