And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Douglas Dauntless SBD - My Father was a crew chief for a Marine dive bomber squadron that flew these during the entire Solomon Islands campaign, starting at Guadalcanal.
I served in the Navy 1970-74 and was a little out of place among all the Marines, but I got to meet some of the men my Dad served with, at a 50 year reunion in 1992 of formation of the squadron in 1942. Truly the greatest generation.
Weight, size, amount of ammo it can carry, NOT shooting INTO the wind. Remember .30 is 30.06, a useful round. Still hits hard enough out to 1000 yards.
My Father's brother - Uncle Jack, died at Okinawa. USS Bunker Hill. Rear gunner, radio operator, combat photographer. His is the only name from the state of Delaware at the Memorial in Hawaii. John Joseph Williams. RIP.

ReplyDeleteIt was said of the Dauntless, "It isn't Fast, but It sure is Slow"

DeleteI've wondered why this plane was equipped with 30 caliber machine guns instead of 50 caliber machine guns. Weight perhaps?
