And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Fred had a somewhat diverse collection of roles, I think. anyway he always delivered.
he played a great heel at least twice, one in this film and another in "The Apartment". both wilder films. I've read he wasn't the first choice for "The Apartment".
EGR provides much, has a similar role in "The Stranger", a Welles film in 1947 that has odd non-connected similarities to "Double Indemnity" and "The Third Man"('49).
Barbara Stanwyck was just hot. Fred MacMurray, on the other hand, not a big fan of. His delivery seems to always be too fast, almost like not acting but delivering rapid lines. I know many love him, but I'm not one of those many. (except for Steve Douglas).
At that time she was the highest paid actress in H-wood. And Fred almost always portrayed a "bad guy" until he became Steve Douglas.

DeleteMy favorite Noir movie.
ReplyDeleteWatched a digitally remastered version in a theater recently. You really don't get the real experience watching great films like this at home on TV.
