And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

1931 Macchi-Castoldi MC-72 at the Italian Air Force Museum Rome. 440 MPH on floats, a world record never bettered.
Contra-rotating props recover a lot of the energy otherwise wasted in the swirling flow aft of the props. At the cost of some mechanical efficiency and complexity, you can regain more in aerodynamic efficiency. The fastest prop plane in the world is the Soviet/Russian Tu-95 Bear with 4 montrously powerful turboprop engines driving a pair of 4-bladed props each.
Two V12s will do that. The copper on the struts and floats are the surface cooling system, so no radiator to create drag.

Like to know how/why they came up with that prop design.

ReplyDeletePorco's airplane was based on the Macchi M33. One of my favorite. Get the model hobby kit, it is fun.
DeleteThere were also radiators on the top of the wings. What is not to like with a red airplane?
ReplyDelete440 MPH on the floats.
ReplyDeleteWonder what it'd do in the air.
Grammar Nazi Point Of Order:
