And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is fascinating, but a bit depressing. Life in Appalachia in the 30’s. Agee and Evans were an exceptional team. Great photos and text. Highly recommended
This book went to India with me in the early 60's and came back with me in the 70's. It's still in my library and I read through it for "standing on the shoulders of our forebearers" moments..

ReplyDeleteNot Appalachia. Alabama. Someone wrote a sequel in the 1990s - "And Their Children After Them". Sought out the descendants from the 1930s book.
