    1. The magpies brought it down, the wolf is just scavenging.

  2. opportunistic, their beaks cannot get through the skin and need a wound to get at the meat. examples are given of ravens "leading lost hikers, etc" to safety in the forest, when actually the intent might be leading them to a predator to share a meal.

in NC we had a deer dead in the road, buzzards and crows pecked its eyes out but coud not pierce the skin to eat further.

  3. Magpies and crows follow hunters, both 2 and 4 legged up here in the Rockies.

  4. lots of birds are meat eaters by oppurtunity. many go for the animal fat.

  5. Watched a carcass in the Lamar Valley once where there was practically a conga line. A grizzly bear was head of the dance. Behind him were a couple of wolves. A bald eagle perched nearby regally surveying the scene while crows danced about waiting their turn. Amazingly, there were fewer than a dozen of us willing to stand in a snow storm to watch this scene.

  6. Crows will call wolves to a carcass so they will tear it open and the birds can feed.
