    1. Those are amphibious floats the wheels retract into the floats. You can see the door hinges near the keel. My first job was fixing bush planes in Northwestern Ontario. The planes were all on straight floats (amphibs are heavy which reduces revenue cargo) so we had to attach beaching gear or use a dolly to bring the plane from the water to the hangar.
