  1. They have to come out often (I can't remember if it's 50 or 100hrs) for cleaning and gapping. They also need cleaning any time the mixture control is left too rich which fouls the plugs with carbon.

  2. A friend rebuilt a 1936 Fairchild F-24 from the ground up. Meaning not one piece of the bird which he had not handled.

The cowling around the Jacobs engine he hand made - truly an amazing equal part of art and industrial design. He also made some of the tools needed in the project.

I mention the cowling but as example of his great skill. Upon his completion, that aircraft was singularly the best aircraft I had ever seen. No doubt he would have won Grand Champion at Oshkosh, but he groundlooped weeks before the big event. Auwé

In general, radial engines are inspired works of art. I could watch and listen all day.

    1. So great is his talent and diligence is that he rigged the aircraft better than when it left the factory.

  3. Aesthetics aside, the best thing to happen to commercial aviation is the jet engine.

    1. And the worse thing for the planet and people on the ground. Testing shows residual jet fuel in everyone tested.

    3. Twice this morning I experienced the thrill of massive acceleration pushing me into the seat. Then climbing at 230 kts for almost 3,000 fpm in the initial climb to 10,000.

I'll do it again sometime this week.
