Upward Bound

  1. Actually, probably coming in for a landing.
As related in earlier posts, when they're upward-bound, they're leaving a 20' flame trail behind an 80°-85° angle of attack on the way to 40K, to tank up before ascent to mission height at 85K' or so.

That'un in the pic was probably on final approach to Beale AFB or somesuch to land. It was the only time you'd ever get one of them with actual horizon in the pic that was green and brown instead of all blue or black.

  2. That is a Brian Shul photo at Beale. It is in his "Blackbirds and Butterflies" book.

    1. Look up and listen to Brian Shul talk. A very interesting story to say the least.
