  1. Calamari is squid, but the image shows an octopus which, in Italian, is polpo.

  3. calimari is great fried.

Baby Octopus is great pickled in a salad. Just watch for the crunchy beak.

  4. The drawing shown is not enturely mythical. The Giant Pacific Octopus can grow to 80 lbs, probably more.

A friend of my dad nearly died in an epic undersea battle while scooping up Abalone in a bay in Washington state. He was bitten several times, his SCUBA regulator rendered non-operable. His mask torn away, his vision was limited during the battle. Even his dive knife was taken from him.

He ended up in the hospital with lacerations, punctures, and deep wounds from the suckers. A friend recovered his tank as he was not about to go back into the water there

I had my own fight but in Hawaii. A different species of Octopus and about eight lbs. He tore away my mask and chest and both arms bore sucker marks. I turned him inside out which we learned from the old Hawaiians. He gave up right then and we had him for lunch. I was ten yrs.

  5. That illustration is originally from an excellent novel by Victor Hugo called Toilers of the Sea.
