A bullet lodged in a bible that saved the life of the American Civil War soldier carrying it at the battle of Antietam, 1862

  2. Rather close to the edge, too - and it looks like it came in at an angle....

  3. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

    1. I didn't realize that you were there to witness this particular battle. So, during your observation and apparent recollection of this specific incident, how many bullets did this man get pounded with before he died right next to you. You better go tell the family their story is wrong because you are always right.

    2. Quote from the movie "Support Your Local Sheriff" with regards to the badge James Garner picked-up and the response from Jack Elam. Great movie and a humorous response to the original post.

    3. Special Ed @ 7:05A,
      I thought anybody of average intelligence could figure out the quote source, after I put it right in my comment. All my fault for assuming bare facility with the English language. I'd stay anonymous all the time too, if that was me.
      Say, why not stop trying to sharpshoot me (and blasting yourself in the foot instead), do bloghost CW and everyone else who visits here a huge favor, and put a sock in it unless you've got something that isn't just another lame troll based on pure butthurt? Just for the novelty. You could even sign your posts, and nobody would ever connect Real You with the above anonymous blockheaded churlishness. Win-win. Even I'd have no idea it was you down the road, and you could get a second chance to just stop being a d--k and trolling strangers to pick a fight. Just a thought. Most folks figure this out on their own before they finish grade school, but I'm willing to go the extra mile to help you out with that reminder. And then we can all say a happy goodbye to Special Ed.

      @Anon 12:39P,
      Sincere thanks for explaining the joke the short bus crowd.
      But I can only award a 9/10. The response was actually from Harry Morgan (Mayor Ollie Perkins). Still a great flick. If only Ed had gotten a little culture before he popped off, he might have enjoyed a chuckle with us, instead of looking like a chucklehead.

  5. Aesop, an interesting comment.

    Please expand, given what you posted this morning at Cold Fury comments.

  6. If I am not mistaken, a common weapon from the Civil War was smoothbore that fired a charge of a larger, near-bore sized projectile and then 3 smaller balls. The Bible may have stopped the one ball, but not the other projectiles. And as Aesop intimated, one ball in a hail of hundreds is no guarantee of safety or survival.
