The Ultimate Fireplace Mantle

  1. my dad made a living out of making custom fireplaces for rich people.
one I remember the most was the one with a big walnut log type of Mantle.
he went back every year for like five years to re-point up the brickwork.
it took 4 of us to put that log in place too. he also did wonderful stone work, but he hated doing it. he always said it took 3-4 times longer to build with stone.
I have built 3 in my life myself, just helping some friends out. I learned a lot from dad about building them. dad was right about stone work, it is a pain in the ass to do. looks great afterwards, but still a pain to do.

  2. It's a Mantle Piece. A Mantle is a heave winter coat, traditionally hung on the Mantle Piece to get warm. Thus the name.

  3. Outstanding mid of rock and wood! And thanks to Anon for the lesson on why it's called a mantle piece.

  4. I like the whole set up, the rock base and that mantle with the numbers carved in to it, built to last & I hope they always keep it as is.
