Going past Whiskeytown, this view arises of the snow capped Shasta Bally (Bally being a Wintun word meaning mountain).
This mountain is prominent on Redding's western horizon. Love that snow. Last Spring I last saw snow up there on May 13th. We'll see about this year.
64 mountain miles out from Redding.
Destination and turn around: The Straw House. Got some coffee and pastry, sat out on their terrace and enjoyed watching the river roll by.
Below, the gorgeous Trinity River in its canyon.
There's fish in there for sure.
Finally, in the distance, looms the mighty Mount Lassen, a smoldering volcano that last erupted in 1915, and still bumps and rattles today.
Back in Redding by one. Mrs. CW thinks she should organize a NorCal Challengers run out to the Straw House and back, maybe in April. That's a good idea.
Sunday Road Trip, nice
ReplyDeleteBet the cops have a hard time seeing you in that car. Under the radar.
ReplyDeleteHow much for gas?
ReplyDeleteFor this car, it's just over 5 bucks a gallon. Thanks, Brandon.
DeleteWe know who did that!
DeleteCW, some of my fondest memories are of this part of theworld, at this time of year, 35 years ago. I really enjoy the photos you post. Thank you, and keep up the good work JT
ReplyDeleteI believe Mrs. DB and I will drive down from Medford in a couple of weeks and visit the Straw House.
ReplyDeleteWe do not have an orange car, dagnabit. But the Honda Element is a good ride.
Indeed it is. Tell us how the drive goes.
DeleteSaw a Bald Eagle nested on a tree across the river along that stretch of road. My brother and I were on a camping trip with my Dad in 1960, give or take. It was the first one I'd ever seen. I think Dad was more excited than we boys were.
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking us along, CW. Good to see there are still some green trees in that country. It's sure had more than its share of fires in the last several years.
Boy that Orange car sure looks good. Nice mods. Those rotors look like they’re the size of large pizzas.
ReplyDeleteLooks like great fly fishing.
MF
Thanks, and it does take rotors the size of pizzas to stop that thing. But, it has no problem accelerating. Mrs. CW gets a thrill out of the roar it makes as it passes slow cars, on an uphill grade, at a speed of ... well ... we won't say how fast in a public forum in case the CHP is monitoring. But stupid fast, as it should given the premium gas I'm feeding it.
DeleteNice pics, CW. California is far too beautiful a state for its political climate to suck so dreadfully.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fact, Mr. West.
DeleteUnfortunately, most of the people destroying the state spend very little time in the beautiful places and spend zero time asking the opinions of the people that live in those beautiful places and make their livings there.
How far past Whiskeytown? On which side is Shasta Bally? I could not find it on the maps that I use. I appreciate your photos: they remind me of the California in which I grew up, after the war, but I left after HS, back in the 60s.
ReplyDeleteShasta Bally is directly to the west of Redding. If I wander out to get the mail I can turn my head to the right and see it.
DeleteThe Straw House is about 50 miles, give or take, past Whiskeytown, and maybe 20 miles or so past Weaverville.
Nice drive on a sunny day.
