  1. Someone please explain...is the propeller just for show? That IS a jet intake, right? Right behind the 'propeller'? Just doesn't seem aerodynamic if both are working.

    1. That is a variable pitch prop. It is not just for show. That is a very small jet engine. I imagine it is pushing the structural limits of the design speed wise.

  2. But you know that 2 minutes after they turn that engine on there will be oil all over the place. Radials are really leaky bastards. Matter of fact, they will start leaking if you look at them too long.

  3. The 1929 Taperwing Waco, featured at the opening of the International Council of Air Shows convention in Las Vegas on Monday, will fly with aPratt & Whitney 985 radial engine plus a GE CJ610 (J85) jet engine with 3,000 pounds of thrust. The combined power will produce a thrust-to-weight ratio of 1 to 1, which allows it to accelerate going straight up,according to Klatt.

  4. Still one of the more notable thrills in my life, getting an aerobatic ride in the forward open cockpit of an old WACO biplane. The sounds from the engine you feel in your chest. How exhilarating!

  5. That looks like the jet off of a V-1, or a JB-2 Loon, the US copy of the V-1.
