And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Basic School taught us that when that order was given, machine guns were to be fired at the cyclic rate until the barrel melted, all ammo was expended, or a cease-fire was called.
In less dire circumstances, the guns would fire 3- to 5-round bursts, and after a certain number of rounds (200?) in quick succession, the gunner and A-gunner would change barrels, to give the hot one time to cool.
I always thought the barrel should be fitted with a thermometer-like indicator, so the crew wouldn't have to keep a mental count and then make a judgement call.
Should've been swapped out long before!
