And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

No, the tip is tied to the shaft. That being said, that pic doesn't look right, and yes, I've been on the north slope), also with that gear he doesn't look Inupiat, (they just make their clothes differently), also if the ice is thick enough for him to stand on it wouldn't look that clear. Could just be some weird reflections as I can guarantee you the sun is quite close to the horizon (it don't get up much the time of year he'd be doing that).
Yeah, maybe, but he's done this before, so I'm going with 'local knowledge'.

Judging by the looks of this fellow he knows what he's doing. I would trust him to come out on top of whatever comes up from below.
