The power lines at Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, USA, simply and clearly show the curvature of the Earth

Assuming a perfect sphere, which isn't really the case, especially small scale like this.

  1. Yeah, that whole 'flat earth' thingy was bupkis about the time Man first stood erect and said "WTF is over there?"

The Greeks proved what the diameter was. Not that the world was round, but what the circumference was (and pretty accurately, too.)

And that whole 'Columbus' proved world round thingy? Nope. He was going by newer incorrect circumference numbers that said the world was smaller than it was. People who stood by the old numbers said "we know the distance between here going east to China, and kinda knew that the big empty space between here and going west to China has to have something in the way." New smaller figure meant that there probably wasn't something in the way going west.

So... Columbus proved... the ancient Greeks were correct.

Unless... you're my father-in-law, who said you can see the deep part of the ocean because it's humped up... yeah... no...

  2. Not round, Since the Earth is flattened at the poles and bulges at the Equator, geodesy represents the figure of the Earth as an oblate spheroid. The oblate spheroid, or oblate ellipsoid, is an ellipsoid of revolution obtained by rotating an ellipse about its shorter axis
