Video of Soccer Match Ruined When AI-Controlled Camera Mistakes Ref’s Bald Head for Ball

Someday AI will probably rule the world, and we'll all be its slaves, but not yet.

The camera was programmed to automatically follow the ball, removing the need for a human camera person. Outside of taking a person’s job, it seems kind of neat in theory. The issue was that the camera couldn’t tell the difference between the ball and the bald head, continually focusing on a man standing around not doing much, rather than actually let fans see the action.

  1. As a computer user since 1981, I called BS on "AI" years ago. A computer
cannot think, it can only run programs. I am a 64 year old man who was
bombarded with adds tor Kotex, Tampons, douches and other girly stuff
If you are targeting your ads at least get the sex right!

  3. The next thing you know, referees will be forced to wear a "Tudball wig".
If the reference escapes you, look up the Tim Conway character Mr. Tudball, part of the Carol Burnett Show.

  5. It appears that the programming switches the camera point of view from the ball to the bald head when the ball is obscured on the field by a player. Per Leonard's comment above, this "AI" appears to be relatively simple pattern recognition and poorly done.

  6. I would like to try a self driving car. Cruise control is wonderful on long trips. Problem is I won't spend what it takes to buy a self drive rig. I talked to a geek friend who loves his self driver.

  7. Just like those Thai people that wear masks on the back of their head to fool the tigers - this guy ought to be wearing a mask like a hat.
