And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Momma cat protects her babies. Lots of excited, uncontrolled language. Backing up like that might have kept her coming.
Going towards the babies was the wrong thing to do, after that backing up did work so it was the correct thing to do. Living thru your mistakes is always a good thing, even better if you learn from it!
I wonder if he wished he had a pistol, at least 357 Magnum. I encountered a mtn lion in PHX's McDowell Mtn Regional Park while camping there 5 or so years ago. He was standing on the trail with his back toward me about 150' away. I backed up another 100' or so and he ambled slowly off over the edge and I hoped to see him making his way through the brush and rock, but no such luck. I was less than 3/8 mile from the campground and it was a 5 mile trip via another trail back to the RV. I stood around for a while and decided to ride slowly, talking a bit loudly, so as not to trigger his chase response. Upon reporting it to the Camp Hosts (after Ranger hours), they totally said it was not true, and I thought they might like to alert park guests that a big cat was spotted, but no. The next day I went to the Ranger office and they were very interested to hear of my encounter and eventually admitted that there were at least 4 of them within the park. Coincidently, the next day while driving through Fountain Hill, I saw a bobcat wander out of a yard. I live in MI's UP and have NEVER seen or heard a bobcat in my life. I have seen 2 other Mtn lions, 1 in the UP 30+ years ago, and one in Ontario near Lake Superior about years ago. Now when riding in the desert, there is a Ruger 357 on my hip and I hope I never need to use it.
I am all for wildlife and conservation....but, I can still remember a pack of wild dog's hitting a farmer's hog lot about a 1/4 mile down the road from our 300 acre farm...back in about '61-62...first time I ever saw a grown man cry...over a 100 dead baby pigs...my Dad and about a dozen other men were on the hunt at the crack of dawn.....EVERY kid within 3-4 miles was NOT allowed out of the house until the men came back with 5 dead dogs...people can NOT grasp the concept of WILD animals....they will kill you if they have a chance...our farm dog Betsy got in a fight with a raccoon in about '63....I was 8 and Dad was a mile away running a combine....the coon was tearing her up so bad Mom let me take Dad's .22 pump octagon barrel out and shot the dam coon....I have NEVER gone out in "The Wild" without a weapon since then...every kid should be raised on a farm until they're at least 12-13-14-15 years old.... It will be a cold day in Hell before I go more than 100 yard's away from safety. And...speaking of PHX...20+ year's ago, my youngest daughter came to visit me and we climbed CamelBack....She didn't know, but, I wasn't worried about any "poor creature's" we might have encountered....
The guy is very lucky mama didn't kill him on the spot. If you're going to hike, go with some friends. If you go alone, go armed with something that will scare the shit out of lion's tiger's and bear's. Oh my!
