A carrying party of the 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters taking grenades up to the front line at La Boisselle, 6th July 1916.
This dates me (or says something about the Cdn Forces) that when I joined not all that long ago (late 60's), the first grenade I threw was a #36 Mills bomb. And those were the boxes they came in...
"taking grenades to the front line" = taking your ass to the front line. expect it to be detained and retrained.
ReplyDeleteThe soil on the path is so sandy that they are walking parallel to the path in the grass. I can only imagine the weariness of these soldiers.
ReplyDeleteSand? Or mud?
DeleteEither way, this is why roads before paving, and trails tend to grow wider over time.

ReplyDeleteAs wars go, that was an exceptionally bad one.
ReplyDeleteHad soldiers carrying the grenades because the brass didn't want to risk the loss of mules.
