The spell begins to break

Not soon enough.

Businesses in four southern California counties have begun declaring independence from the Wuhan virus and from Newsom.

Golf courses in Riverside, Ventura County, will begin allowing golfers to head back out to the course this weekend. Orange County will open golf courses soon. Golfers will play in foursomes and adhere to social distancing. No food will be served on the premises. Ventura County, home to Simi Valley, Oxnard, and Camarillo, has pronounced that gatherings of four or more in one place are illegal. Exercising will be allowed outside, however. Riverside County has ordered golfers to wear face masks. No caddies are allowed and only one person is allowed to be in a golf cart.

Operators of the Mt. Baldy ski resort in San Bernardino County have chosen to reopen, offering probably the last chance to ski before summer sun turns the snow to mush. The resort announced that social distancing measures would be enforced.  Might as well make a few bucks while there are bucks to be made.

And I predict even those rules won't last all that long.  The Swedes don't look so dumb now, do they?

A pal in Sacramento sent me a picture yesterday of the parking lot at a Lowe's in Sacramento.  It was packed.

I figured this type of citizen style re-claiming of their freedoms would happen first in NorCal, but I just heard that Humboldt County is now requiring masks in public.  Sad and disappointing.  Only a few weeks ago the "experts" were telling us they weren't much use, but now the virtue signaling impulse is overwhelming the common sense of the local governments.

Anyway, kudos to those in SoCal who want their life back, and aren't waiting for the word from our elites (Newsom's aunt was married to Ron Pelosi, the brother-in-law of Nancy Pelosi, if you can believe that).

  2. Meanwhile the infection and death rate runs away across the US. Good thinking there!

    1. If you're talking about an infection rate that hits 200 people out of 25,000....yeah...it is running away. They (the Gov) thinks that 50% of the people in the US have already been affected. It is ludicrous to kill our economy like this. Treat adults like adults. The Gov has already added $2,700,000,000,000 to the national budget. Numbers like this do not mean anything anymore. They are too large to comprehend. But our grandchildren and their children and so forth will know exactly what they mean. They mean were the most selfish people to ever inhabit the earth, the ones that fucked them over.

    2. So far there have been 2,697,907 confirmed infections worldwide with 187,193 recorded deaths worldwide. That's 6.94% of infections that have resulted in death. This virus is not over, it's only just getting started. Infections are still accelerating in the US and you advocate getting back to normal! Look at the rest of the world, this is going on everywhere. All economies are struggling. Save the economy and let people die? Economies will recover eventually, dead people won't. Look at the UK, they've just announced continuing with social distancing for at least the rest of the year and they seem to have the spread much more under control than in the US.

    3. Anon, to get the 6.94% you must assume that the confirmed infections is 100% of all infections. That would only be possible if ALL persons were tested. Oh sure, there is statistical sampling but the validity of the same can be rebutted endlessly.

Good grief...save the economy and people will die? Sheesh People die already. As for NY, their counts have included all deaths from other causes IF it was suspected (not confirmed) the deceased may had come in contact with someone else who may have been infected. Hence the high numbers.

  3. Love the statement "...kudos to those in SoCal who want their life back..." Going out and about in the virus infested world will not get your life back, it will more likely take it away, or as you spread the disease take some other persons life away. Lemmings.

  4. We really got a shitty governing class of elite losers in California and to make all suffer we spread them around and make them Speaker of the US House of Representatives. By this point those who are healthy and not really old can safely go about their business and pleasure and if we get the virus, it appears to be luck of the draw and the odds of dying no higher than catching the regular old flu. What we've had is a massive over reaction to another new disease out of China. We should learn from this one so we can be ready for the next one which will be along in oh, about 30 minutes.

  5. Ask yourself who works for whom? Are your elected officials representing you and your interests?

  6. Some things, like personal liberty and fighting subjugation are worth the risk of dying for. My parents, grandparents and others of the Greatest Generation instilled that in me because they had looked the elephant-in-the-room in the eye and didn't blink.

  7. The primary reason for asking people to stay home is not to deny them their liberty but to stop them spreading infection that will then leave the hospitals unable to cope with the huge influx of seriously ill people. By adopting the stance that this is some cover up or other scenario to stop people going about their daily routines will just result in more infections and deaths. Look at the ratio of population versus infections and deaths for New Zealand and then look at the figures for the US. New Zealand are doing it right. The beligerence in the US has taken the other extreme. The US will be a covid-19 hotspot for years because of this attitude and the rest of the world will not want US citizens visiting for a long time to come.

    1. They are not 'asking', they are demanding and making mandatory... Huge difference. I'd rather take my chances and say the emperor wears no clothes. Give it a name, like, oh I don't know, personal liberty.

    3. Only anonymous as I don't have a blog or google account. Ok, so you put your name but it means nothing to me.

Also accept that stay at home is demanded and mandatory. So what. By staying home you're not spreading infection and not putting others at risk, even if you don't care about the risk of becoming infected yourself. Just plain selfish when nurses and medics are working themselves to the bone to care for people infected because of people like you.

    4. Ok Paul, throttle back on the name calling. Anon is welcome to express contrary and unpopular views. Everyone else is free to argue with him, but let's not make it personal.

  8. Humboldt County is literally and figuratively on the left side of California. It started with a bunch of drug-fueled hippies. They destroyed logging and fishing in the area, now they want to make it Venezuela. It's a scary place now. Really depressed area.

    1. An anecdote to highlight how depressed that area; a few years ago I was playing tourist along that section of coast. I made a casual comment that the redwood siding on what of the pastry shop was in need of repair and happened to say I ran a construction company. My intent was to add to the conversation. What really happened was about five guys appeared seemingly out of the woodwork to chortle rather aggressively, Who are you? You aren't recognized, don't even think you will come in and get some work! Man alive, these guys were fighting over small potatoes. It didn't calm them when I said I was just visiting and I'm not gonna take any work up here. They about ran me out of town. Two did block me from refilling my coffee.

  9. I went out to Home Depot and Kroger (the Kroker Store as my parents called it) yesterday. Home Depot had closed the self-checkout and only had two registers opened aside from the Pro registers. Many staff were wearing masks but the cashier I checked out with wasn't. Otherwise, it was a normal day at Home Depot. I was there for a couple of essential furnace filters.

At one Kroger, there was little beef but plenty of eggs (limit of 2) and milk. Since I was after ground beef I went to our other Kroger which is much larger. They had all of anything you would want except paper products. There were some masks but otherwise the store was normal. There were some attempts to social distance but mostly it was just another day at a busy Kroger.

Thanks to Governor Kemp for starting to free up Georgia. My wife and I are puzzled at his choices but more stuff frees up come Monday. Atlanta isn't happy but let'm eat cake.

  10. This here is for Anon and everyone else. The video is less than 5 minutes in length. It's what every citizen should know.

  11. I have watched the video and have never heard such a load of complete crap as these two idiots are spouting. Follow them and you’re all doomed. The older MacAulay is technically correct but fails to grasp why lockdown is required, he can’t see past his blinkered view. The younger MacAulay is an idiot and needs a slap.
Why on earth are you all so suspicious of your government and state governor’s actions and intents? As it says in the video, your constitutional rights are indeed absolute. No one is denying that. At 1.49 is the statement: “No emergency or plea of necessity excuses a governor’s violation of their state constitution.” Again, absolutely true. However, the enemy this time is not one approaching over the hill armed with spears. This is an unseen enemy, something way beyond the realms of fantasy at the time the constitution was laid down. It requires a special kind of patriotism this time. To protect you, your loved ones and your fellow citizens you need to all stay apart for the time being, so that the enemy can’t spread amongst you.
Imagine this scenario. Your mom is 93 years old and living in a senior citizens care facility. In there she has several friends, all of similar ages, some more frail and vulnerable than others. You are strong, fit and healthy. Your neighbour has a nasty illness that is infectious. As is your right, you decide to go to his house to visit but do not take the precaution of keeping a safe distance from him, why should you do something that has been recommended by others, you’ll make up your own mind thank you very much. You visit with your neighbour, go home to your wife and kids and then decide to go visit mom, take her some flowers maybe, from the flower store down the street. A week later, your mom and two of her friends are fighting for their lives in hospital, on ventilators. Your wife is feeling ill. Your kids are fine and so are you. You go about your life as normal, whilst mom, some of her friends and now your wife are all seriously ill. The doctor is called to your wife. Whilst visiting, the doctor tests you. You test positive but have no symptoms. You have spread your neighbour’s illness to your mom, her friends and your wife. But you’re fine. This is why lockdown works. If you had followed the lockdown, your mon, her friends and your wife would all be fine.
The MacAulays are clearly the ones with an agenda here. The older MacAulay simply sees that the need for social distancing is not covered by the consitituion so therefore it must be wrong. The younger idiot thinks that once the curve has been flattened we can all return to normal. What a stupid cretin he is. Use your brain sonny, think about what you’re saying. If there is still virus present, as soon as you let life return to normal you will be back where you started and another wave will strike. And so it will go on. If, however, you maintain lockdown long enough the virus will die out.
Look to New Zealand. Very early lockdown. About 12 deaths in the entire country. The US on the other hand, can’t get their constitution rights out of their minds and have tens of thousands of deaths and that will continue unabated as long as you carry on as normal.
I do not advocate taking away civil liberties. I do advocate taking different, unusual steps to save lives of fellow countrymen.

  12. Right come with responsibilities. But that is up to the individual. The state does not dictate. Everything, I mean everything, comes far after our rights.

Now we do have the responsibilities. That includes being responsive to things like this COVD-1984. But I will determine my response. No specific example of events will change that.
