And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
That's what I call a short landing! those bush planes are amazing being able to stop so quickly! The shortest stop I've ever been on in a prop plane is on a Twin Otter into the island of Saba. Saba is notable for a couple of things - Mt. Scenery is the highest point in the kingdom of the Netherlands (2877 feet, with a staircase to the top), and the airport is claimed to be the shortest in the world - here's a good video
There are quite a few other videos out there - note the "X" on each end of the runway - only the Twin Otters or other STOL aircraft can go in, although the locals say a Tomcat driver did a couple of touch and goes quite a few years ago (that must have been a hoot!). Oh, and don't be surprised if your pilot makes a low downwind pass to clear the goats off the runway before making a turn to final for landing!
Taking off from there in an Otter is a bit like a slow cat shoot - you fly off the end of the runway and take a bit of a dip in altitude before you climb out. Great little island, nice folks, and some nice diving.
Their videos are great.
ReplyDeletewe need checklists for everything we do with an airplane so we don't forget the gas caps and gust locks...
ReplyDeleteI really wish I could afford that. Sooo much fun. I love flying.
