I'm not so sure it's safe to stand so close to that monster.

And is it just me, or is it running rich?

  1. A rich mixture burns cooler so on the ground you leave the mixture control in 'Rich', open the cowl gills, monitor your cylinder temp gauge and adjust your mixture accordingly. If you leave it too rich for too long you'll foul all the plugs which then have to be removed and cleaned. If you let the mixture get too lean, cylinder temp will rise too high and you'll get pre-ignition that may destroy a piston.

When running an engine in a test stand, a stubby wooden "prop" is fitted to provide cooling air flow over the cylinders. He doesn't have any airflow for cooling so he can't run it long and I'll bet it is running hot.

  2. Wife heard the audio and asked "Is that a car?" No, it is a round aircraft engine like your mother used to fly. "Oh wow!"
MIL was a WASP during WWII and the AT-6 was probably her favorite aircraft. She continued flying until she was 88. RIP Grandma Fran.

  3. Two unique things about radial engines, the sound and the smell.
