And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The Ardoss Wolf
A Pictish carving of a wolf, found in 1890 in a field dyke near to Ardross in Ross-shire.
Hi Brigid! The funny thing is, according to the caption, it was found in a "dyke," which means that it was likely originally part of a much larger stone, which was broken up and reused in a very prosaic way. What a shame, but it also means that fences and "dykes" would be an interesting study. Who knows what other incredibly ancient art is keeping the sheep in the pasture!
Wouldn't mind having that...
ReplyDeleteYou must be part Pictish!
DeleteOK, I already have a shelf of all kinds of bones and such, but would love to add that to it.
