And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Probably still holds the record for climb to 10,000 feet if you factor in takeoff distance. It was about 90 seconds from a standing start to 10,000 feet and that was with ammunition etc.. The crew chief fiddled with the supercharging and allowed override of boost limits at sea level but it was otherwise stock.
Too maximize performance, maximize horsepower and minimize weight. The designers lightened the wing structure, and so they incorporated a feature which allowed the wingtips to break off, if the pilot was pulling too much positive G. Kept him from pulling the wings off. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_F8F_Bearcat
