  6. The sled is pulled on a road covered with ice. During the winter they would pull a wagon or sled through, sprinkling water on the road surface until is was covered in ice. The horses had ice caulks in their shoes to provide traction. When you see pictures with loads like this it was typically for a purpose. Either a record load or for some special event. I've seen this picture before and this particular load might be the one sent to the Chicago 1893 worlds fair as part of the State of Michigan exhibit that year.

  8. At least 20-25 ton on that load. One oak log like that is around a thousand pounds or more when they're green.
