  1. Scored a wicked nice hand made frog lure at a yard sale, had articulating legs and hooks everywhere, carved and very nicely painted balsa wood so it floated and wiggled like a frog on the surface, first time I casted that baby right along the edge of a patch of cat tails, expecting a bass or pike to rush it, sure enough first time success like instantly, thought I hooked a freekin whale, started pulling me and the canoe as it swam away, turns out it was a big old gnarly snapping turtle, was near a spot where a couple families where fishing and having themselves a pic nic, one of the dad's started yelling over when I got the snapper's head up out of the water by the gunwale, could'nt understand what he and others where all excited about cause they where yelling in some ither language, but no doubt they wanted the turtle, cause one guy dove in and swam up to the canoe, in broken english he asked how much I wanted fir the turtle, shook my head said you can have it, i just want to retrieve my frog lure, at first i guess he did not understand because he offered $150 bucks, which in early 80's was a lot of money. Told him keep your money, but help me get the hooks out of his bill and its yours. I could not describe not just how happy they all where about getting that turtle, but how fast they all threw their stuff in the cars and high tailed it away. I guess from what one fellow was saying turtles are like the ultimate delicacy to them. Sounded like they all were Portuguese to me. It was insane how fast they carried that turtle over the a station wagon back deck while all hands scooped up everything and just threw all their stuff, like an old black and white sped up comedy movie. Those snappers got a head and neck like a snake too, a good two plus feet, it was hissing and trying to bite the heck out of us, pretty pissed off one too. Anyone here ever taste turtle? Isn't particularly appetizing for me. Had to be a lot of meat in that one, from all the jabbering going on as they packed up and the repeated thanks, they all couldn't wait to dine on it.
