And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
That's called "piking a pole". Pole Pikes have a pointed metal tip that digs into the pole. Used them when setting poles where a truck couldn't get to....
Wow, . . . gotta be extra careful, . . . that gets away from you, you're not going to be able to get out of the way fast enough (especially on the side of a hill) :) !
In a small town in Germany in 1990 I watched them raise a tall May Pole that way. Four men holding each pair of crossed poles. On command they all lifted together, braced it and took a break. It took all mornin during the May Day Festival.
