  4. Why isn't it at the top? It can't be seen from the other direction which violates the raison d'être of a beacon.

      last mile of trail with rock bluffs to the top?

    2. It faces north(west) out to sea, more or less towards Iceland 400 miles away, on the north end of a long narrow island that has other islands immediately to its west, east, and south. So it doesn’t need to be seen from the other direction. That peak in the picture is behind it to the south.
