The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Are you sure? Many a time, I’ve come up behind a vehicle on a two lane road, driving well below the posted limit. All I can see, is opossum-gray hair, barely above the steering wheel.
Anon has it right. Possums have to drive on the back roads where there isn't much traffic. Just think what would happen if they were on one of the major thoroughfares, got scared and played dead. That would be a real mess.
Some gorgeous pictures this week CW but possums shouldn't be allowed to drive vehicles, at least on public roads. If you want to let your possum drive on your land have at it.
