And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
That is good advice. I have retreated from several animal encounters. The one I did not retreat from was in Northern Guatemala. I ran into a pack of wild hogs---jabali they call them there---and they began to surround me. There was no retreat possible. I removed my backpack, grabbed a long machete in one hand and an Al Mar knife in the other and banged those together which made a loud clanging sound. Then I charged at them, screaming "You f****** porkchops!" Stupid? Yep. Foolish? Yep. Careless? Yep. But they took off.
It makes for a good story now 12 years later. But at the time I was about scared out of my wits. After those hogs fled I sat on the jungle floor and laughed. And cried. No more experiences like that one, please God.
Encountered something like this in the Andes near the Argentine town of Bariloche. I retreated, and so lived.
ReplyDeleteretreating when you can is often the best idea to save your life! Must have been an 'interesting' experience

I'm guessing this was taken by a drone.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine the stories this goat could tell his grandchildren?
