And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Sadly, Sean didn't take the sage advice from many wise men when he dealt with Mary Kate. That being: "What do you say to an agitated woman"?...."NOTHING"!
If I recall, this is right at the end of the movie, and after this they turn around and walk back toward the cottage, with a great sense of....purpose.
What Maureen O’Hara whispered to John Wayne in the scene is a secret that the stars have both taken to the grave. What we do know is that director John Ford wanted to capture a genuine reaction from Wayne and asked O’Hara to whisper something ‘extremely suggestive’ as the scene was playing out.
