  1. Back when you could tie something to your roof and not dent anything.

    1. Did you notice the mattress under the boat? Useful after getting to camp. Can't see enough of the plate to get a date. If wartime, no new cars, or tires, available. Passenger visible, so at least two going fishing. Gear may be visible in the boat.

  3. When Dad used to take us boys camping in the '60s we took a blue '53 Merc with a homemade box on top. The box had those rails that had suction cups that were maybe three inches around and the rail had straps that sucked everything down tight to the car's rain gutters. The box held all our camping gear and a foldable kayak that my brother made in his woodshop class.

In different years we took that rig to the Eel River country, the Redwoods, Quincy and various other Sierra locations. I think the highlight of all those trips was when we were on 299 between Eureka and Redding when Dad suddenly pulled the car over in a wide spot, got us boys out and told us to look across the river at top of the tallest tree.
It was my first sighting of a Bald Eagle and it was quite a thrill for a 10 year old kid.

  4. Well, better hope it ain't raining on the way. The boat tied like that? Will fill up and the increased weight will be hell on the car's roof. I did something stupid like that with a canoe on a homebuilt trailer. Loaded it right side up so I could put gear in it. Rained the whole trip, had to stop multiple times and siphon the water out of the canoe. I would watch the 2x4 cross-beams in my mirror, when I saw them sagging by more than several inches, I knew to pull over and drain water again.
