And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Oh, OK. Well our grown son is 1000 miles away. And if someone wants to get to my wife they'll have to go through 1000 feet of flaming hell first. I'm too old to fight, just blow the heads off at the end of the driveway, the wild scavengers can take over from there.
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer Comin' in on a wing and a prayer With our one motor gone We can still carry on Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
What a show, what a fight Boys, we really hit our target for tonight How we sing as we limp through the air Look below, there's our field over there With our one motor gone We can still carry on Comin' in on a wing and a prayer
Comin' in on a wing and a prayer Comin' in on a wing and a prayer With our full crew on board And our trust in the Lord We're comin' in on a wing and a prayer
Eighth Air Force!!!!!! That's a B-17 portrayed in the poster. Most of the Eighth are dead now. Only a few still living now and after all the confusion over the virus and the so-called vaccine there will be fewer still. Sad.
The Postmaster of the little town I lived in as a kid in the Sierra flew 50 missions as a tail gunner on a B-17. I never knew this until after he had passed away. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/appealdemocrat/name/leland-pauly-obituary?pid=187671744 His plane was shot down on what would have been his 51st mission. He was a wonderful man.
My Dad's buddy flew B bombers in WW2. Germany & Pacific. Before he left for the UK, he flew to Ohio and buzzed his hometown. When he retired in the 1980s he went to visit his hometown. In the local hardware store, guy behind the counter noticed his bomber jacket..guy says " when i was a kid, one of those planes flew over our town" Clem said " Yeah..that was me "
Fate is the Hunter by Ernest K. Gann. Flying was a very uncertain business back in those days, even for non-combat pilots. I got busy once and made up a spreadsheet of the number of times he almost got killed flying and another listing people he knew who got killed flying. They were long lists.
Mommy… why does the grocery boy deliver the groceries late at night since Daddy went to fly in the war???
ReplyDeleteTHAT is a cool picture. and that is why you fight.
ReplyDeleteWhat does that even mean?
Deletemy intention was that you go to war not just to stop the enemy but to protect those you love.

ReplyDeleteLooks like it's dragging a refueling boom.
DeleteMore likely to be a glider tow cable. The propeller would make midair fueling stressful.

ReplyDeleteWatch "The Cold Blue" if you haven't
ReplyDeleteWhen I was that litle, every night my mother showed me a picture of my father and we prayed for his safe return.
ReplyDeleteWhen his ship came in, she says I broke free and ran for him yelling "that's my daddy"
No opinion on "why we fight", but gents: chose your wife with care.
That's what I saw in this picture.
